Record Breaking Clyde Marshall Memorial: Thrills and Spills at Lithgow City Raceway
The Clyde Marshall Memorial marked a significant milestone for our racing community, as Combined Districts Kart Club welcomed an impressive 205 entries. This event not only showcased our passion for the sport but also marked CDKC’s largest gathering since the last 2013 State Titles, which boasted an impressive 297 entries.
Club President, Russell Becker, explains, “To put this into perspective, we believe this event stands as the largest single-day gathering not only for our club but potentially across the entire KNSW scene. This speaks volumes about the enthusiasm we witnessed on this extraordinary day.”
As the day kicked off, in typical Lithgow fashion, the rain clouds appeared, and it was no surprise when the track officials declared the track wet. This set the stage for an adrenaline-pumping start as karters of all ages dove into Turn 1, grappling with the unpredictable grip of the wet surface.
And just like the Lithgow weather, which can change from picture perfect to rainy in the blink of an eye, the event had its share of ups and downs that added to the excitement. The race event was an exhilarating roller coaster of thrills and spills that left participants and spectators alike in awe.
The highlight of race day was the heart-pounding 20-lap finals that pushed both skills and nerves to the limit. With each lap, the challenge of staying on the track grew, testing even the most experienced racers.
In the end, the event was a true test of skill, courage, and adaptability. The ever-changing weather and track conditions made every moment a challenge, pushing the limits of both drivers and their pit crew.
This annual event celebrates the life of Clyde Marshall, a stalwart member of the Lithgow Kart Club (which became CDKC). He served as the dedicated caretaker of our beloved track for several decades, spanning from the 60s through the early 80s. His commitment and dedication have left an indelible mark on our racing heritage.
As we move forward, we honour the past while embracing the future. In the lead up to the NSW State Titles in late September, the club has undergone extensive improvements and renovations. From allocated pit areas, new in grid and out grid, new fencing and of course, the state-of-the-art tower and control systems, this could not have been achieved without the help of our Members and volunteers.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Mitch Lozina, Club Treasurer, Chief Earthmover, builder and project manager extraordinaire. The highlight for Mitch was qualifying second in the TAG Restricted Heavy, and even though circumstances may have prevented him from completing the final, Mitch remains a champion in our eyes. His commitment to the club and his ability to ‘get stuff done’ makes him a true winner in every sense.
Combined Districts Kart Club will be hosting the NSW State Titles on 29 September to 1 October 2023. With 186 entries so far, it’s shaping up to be one of the best events on the Karting Calendar. To learn more about this event, visit kartingnsw.com.au
